
Unique in its way, the botanical garden situated in Bucharest opened its gates in 1860 on the initiative of Doctor Carol Davila, near by the faculty of medicine.
Situated in the west part of the city, on the right bank of Dambovitza river the garden of 7 ha was arranged by Ulrich Hoffman - the botanist that later on, would also become the first director of the institution. Six years later the leadership of the botanical garden was taken by the well known botanist Dimitrie Grecescu which developed the plants collections and increased the exchanges with the European gardens. Under his lead was published the first catalogue containing 3700 indoor and outdoor species of plants. In 1870 the development of the botanical garden was interrupted, the location serving now as a park for the royal family. There are some particular methods of preserving flowers, buds or leaves: drying, pressing and preserving with glycerin.The flowers drying process consist of eliminate the water from all the flower or plant cells.

• So you can naturally dry the full-blown flowers, leaves or buds, by making small bouquets (from 3-5 stems, because the many they are, the higher risk of mould) which have to be tied with the head downwards on a pendent wire. The secrets is to put the flowers to dry in a shady, but well ventilated space, with a 20-30 degrees temperature, which accelerates the drying, so that the flowers will maintain better the original color. The stems of the dried flowers become usually fragile and could change their shape. To avoid that, you can stick in the stem thin wire.

• When you have to leave your loving pot flowers for a long time, you have 2 possibilities to keep them living. Firstly, put exactly near the pot a bottle full of water. Introduce a flexible tube in the bottle and the end of it in the soil pot, at 2-3 cm depth. Thus the water will slowly pass through the tube, letting the flower to be always well hydrated. The aphis is one of the most pernicious for the plants. You can get rid of it if follow our steps. You’ll need 2 packets of cigarette without filter and 1/2 l of water. Put only the tobacco in water, let it to macerate for a couple of days then percolate it. Put 10-15 drops of this solution on the plant’s base then water it without touching the flowers or leaves. Repeat the practice after 2-3 days. If the aphis is still there, you have to change the soil, clean the pot and then to treat again the plant.
Did you know that …
• The water from the flowers’ vase will no longer be debased, if you put in it a copper coin. Ulterior the water has not to be changed, but completed off and on.
• The wild flowers will resist more in water if you put in it some salt.
