New flower variety developed

A local chrysanthemum flower breeding company has unveiled the latest flower cuttings variety -Arctic Queen. John Rutten Fiduga his managing director said the cuttings produce large white flowers with a green centre. The flower is being bred exclusively for the Russian market. The cuttings, which are bred here, will be grown in Holland from where they will be exported to Russia. Rutten said Russia is expected to import over 500,000 stems of the Arctic Queen every week.

The flowers cost euros 2 (about sh4,600) per stem. Rutten said Fiduga is Netherlands-based parent company Fides developed the flower fashioned on a crown picked from the North Polar region. They believed after the discovery that there must have been a queen who owned that crown and that she loved flowers. The new variety was launched at the Fides Annual International Directors meeting at Fiduga Farm on Masaka Road. The flower, with a 90mm diameter, is exclusively bred in Uganda. The breeding has been going on for six months. Fides president Rene le Clercq said the vase life for the Arctic Queen is longer than that for any other flower. He said they chose to breed the new variety in Uganda because of the good climate.
